Church St. Georg

The Church St. Georg

The St. – Georg – Church in Gartow presents in a special way either tradition or live of the parishioners. This church has already been mentioned in documents in 1321. Since 1438 the patronage has been possessed by Bülow. In 1694 the St. – Georg – Church was bought by the Earl Andreas Gottlieb von Bernstorff. It is in possession of this family until today. In 1721 the church burned down – afterwards, it was rebuilt by the Earl in the most modern way of this former time.

The whole arrangement of the St. – Georg – Church like the chancel, the baptismal font, the doors of the pews and the Grisaille – paintings originate from that time. IN the summer, the church is daily opened. The service takes place every Sunday at 10.00 o’clock. Guests are very welcomed.

The baroque - style - organ which was restored in 1991 is of an extraordinary importance. It was built in 1740 by the organ – builder Johann Matthias Hagelstein from Lüneburg. It contains sound elements of northern and middle Germany. Based on numerous concerts this organ has a big reputation. This year there will be many concerts, too. During the “Organ Summer of Gartow” which will take place from 7th July to 25th August 2010 the Hagelstein organ can be heard every Wednesday on 18 o’clock.
